TUMESCENT LIPOSUCTION

Tumescent Liposuction was developed in the early and mid 1980's and it was a dramatic improvement over traditional Liposuction, because of two main concepts:

The first was the development of Liposuction under local anesthetic ( called "Tumescent anesthesia" ), so that patients could now avoid the risks of being put to sleep under general anesthesia.

The second development was the use of smaller liposuction surgical instruments called microcannullae, that were smaller than 3 mm in diameter. This has decreased the tissue trauma significantly, and decreased the risk of major complications, which used to be associated with traditional liposuction under general anesthesia.

The risks of liposuction complications have improved further when doctors recognized that they should limit the volume of fat that was removed during one Liposuction surgery.

The next major developments have occurred when ultrasound (sound waves) and laser energy (intense light waves) were introduced into the field of body sculpture and were used to dissolve fat prior to its removal. The latest generation of the ultrasound and laser systems used for body sculpture are the VASER and the Smartlipo MPX, respectively.
